Frequently Asked Questions

Where will the shelter be built?

The new shelter building will be located on the existing Humane Society property next to the current shelter building.

Where will the money come from?

Funds for the capital campaign will come from a variety of sources including grants, business donations, in-kind donations, and donations from individuals

What will happen to the current shelter building?

The current shelter building will be used for storage. Other potential uses are still being discussed.

What is the fundraising goal?

The total fundraising goal is $3.2 million.

I already donate to BCHS, isn’t that enough?

We rely on your ongoing and annual support for regular shelter operations and care of the animals. Those needs will continue during and after the campaign. Your campaign gift is a one-time donation to support the building of the new shelter.

Will the new shelter have space for more animals?

The goal of the Humane Society is to continue to reduce the number of animals coming into the shelter each year. The purpose of the new shelter is to provide safer, healthier and more comfortable housing for the animals we do take in.

If the building is bigger, won’t it be more costly to operate?

Although the new building will be larger, we will design efficiencies in it that the old one lacks. It is likely that operating costs will increase some, but it should not be significantly more.

How long will the capital campaign take?

Our intention is to have all donations pledged and received within three years.

When will the new shelter be finished?

It is anticipated that ground work will begin in 2019 and that the building will be complete in 2020 or 2021.

Can pledges be made in assets other than cash?

Donations other than cash will be considered on a case by case basis. We will be seeking in-kind donations for the construction phase.

Will the money pledged be used for anything other than the proposed plans?

No. All of the money for the campaign will be used for the purpose of building and supporting the new shelter. Any donations above the cost of the building will go into an endowment fund.

How long do I have to fulfill my pledge?

Your pledge can be made over the course of three years.

Are donations tax-deductible?

All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. It’s best to check with your financial advisor or tax preparer to see how that affects you personally.
